Traveling to Tawang
Arunachal Pradesh is an adventurous and picturesque journey. Due to its remote location and challenging terrain, reaching Tawang requires careful planning. Here are the primary transportation options available:
Inner Line Permit (ILP)
Before traveling to Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang, It is mandatory for Indian citizens from outside the state to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP). ILP can be obtained from the Arunachal Pradesh government offices in Guwahati, Tezpur, or online through the Arunachal Pradesh tourism website – https://www.eilp.arunachal.gov.in/.

It is recommended to obtain the ILP in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
By Air
The nearest airport to Tawang is Guwahati airport, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Tawang. Alternatively if weather permits there are helicopter flying to Tawang (Need to check with operator for the same). You can also take a flight from Guwahati to Tezpur and then proceed to Tawang by road.
By Road
Tawang is connected to the rest of Arunachal Pradesh and neighboring states via roadways. There are two main routes to reach Tawang:
Tezpur-Bomdila-Tawang Route: This route is commonly preferred by travelers. You can reach Tezpur in Assam by air or rail and then proceed to Bomdila, another scenic town in Arunachal Pradesh. From Bomdila, continue the journey to Tawang, which takes around 7 to 8 hours by road.
Guwahati-Bhalukpong-Bomdila-Tawang Route: If you prefer starting your journey from Guwahati, Assam, you can take this route. From Guwahati, drive to Bhalukpong, which serves as the gateway to Arunachal Pradesh. Proceed from Bhalukpong to Bomdila and then to Tawang. The total travel time from Guwahati to Tawang is approximately 10 to 12 hours.
It’s important to note that the road conditions can be challenging, especially in hilly areas, and weather conditions may affect travel. It is advisable to hire a local driver or use a reliable taxi service that is familiar with the terrain and can ensure a safer and more comfortable journey.
Public Transportation
Public buses operate between Tezpur/Bhalukpong and Tawang, but the frequency and availability may vary. Shared cabs or taxis are a more popular and convenient option for transportation within the region.
As Tawang is located at a high altitude, it’s advisable to plan for acclimatization and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Carry essential items such as warm clothing, comfortable footwear, medications, and sufficient drinking water.
